In November 2012, GIOWISYS Software UG, an ambitious company that develops user friendly, efficient, and portable applications, released Symphytum version 1.0 to the public. In doing so, the company rolled out a properly good personal database software tool that will only get better and better as time goes on. GIOWISYS Software explained that new features and improvements will be made and released via updates. Version 1.0 is a good beginning, but it’s only the starting point. As the version number goes up, so will the number of features Symphytum has to offer.

Symphytum is available for Microsoft Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8), Apple Mac OS X (10.6 and newer), and Ubuntu Linux (12.04 and newer). The Windows installation file is little over 9MB in size. Download this file, run it, and you will be presented with a straightforward setup wizard that will take you through all the installation steps. When its done with the installation process, the setup wizard will ask to launch the Symphytum application.

The Symphytum interface is divided into two sections. On the left, you have a pane that lists all your collections. A Medicinal Plants collection is built into the application; it will be the only collection you see when you launch the application. On the right, there’s a pane that presents all the records inside a collection. In the upper part there are links for creating a new collection, adding new records to the collection, and more.

If you want to, you can customize the Symphytum interface from Tools -> Preferences -> Appearance. There’s a dropdown menu in the Appearance submenu that allows you to change the background color.

As mentioned above, Symphytum is a personal database software that allows you to manage your data efficiently and keep everything nicely sorted. You will be able to create collections, add a field to the collection (there are several field types to choose from: text, number date, image, file list, and more), and add records to the collection. Of course, there’s also the option to import external data into Symphytum and the option to export records out of Symphytum. Another nice feature the application has to offer is cloud synchronization – Symphytum can sync your database with a cloud service, like Dropbox for example.

Symphytum can be used for free, for evaluation purposes, for a trial period of 14 days.

By blending together ease of use, powerful functionality, and a good looking interface, Symphytum proves to be a properly good personal database software.

Pros

Symphytum is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Ubuntu. Installing the application on Windows takes little time and effort. The interface is good looking and easy to use; you can change the background color if you want to. Easily create a database with custom collections, categories, and fields. The database can be synced with a cloud service.

Cons

Free to use for a 14-day trial; nag screen.
